Cristóbal Balenciaga is regarded as one of the greatest couturiers of the 20th Century and was so often described as ‘The King of Fashion’ by his contemporaries like Coco Chanel and Christian Dior. He was a true master of tailoring and his structural and voluminous designs were worn by the greatest stars at the time including Ava Gardner, Grace Kelly and Jackie Kennedy.
The Victoria & Albert Museum in London is currently holding an exhibition ‘Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion’ featuring some of Balenciaga’s most famous works along with designs by his protégées who drew influence from his style.
Balenciaga’s famous single-seam coats, voluminous ball gowns and even a coat featuring ostrich feathers, worn by Ava Gardner for a red carpet appearance, leave you in total admiration for the creativity of a man who was way ahead of his time.
The exhibition features over 100 pieces of courture including pieces by Alexander McQueen, Givenchy, Oscar de la Renta, Paco Rabanne and Commes DesGarcons.
If you love fashion, this is an unmissable chance to see some of the greatest pieces of couture from the last century that will truly leave you appreciating and understanding just how much work goes into making a single piece of high fashion.
Tickets are available from the V&A website or from the museum itself and the exhibition is on until 18th February 2018.
